Often we preach, even teach that the Word of God is Powerful but we have yet to fully grasp its usefulness and its real value. We get excited about it; even rejoice about it but somehow in our day to day lives, when faced with crippling circumstances, we’re so overwhelmed that we may not even think or know how to USE IT!
This teaching is on a mission to wake us up to the power (explosiveness, energy) of the Word of God and to shift our mindset from just seeing the BIBLE as a leather-bound book of stories, to seeing GOD. If we could grab a hold of the fact that the WORD is GOD (Jn. 1:1) and see who He is: our Provider, our Deliverer, our Rock, and the Ruler of Everything; we would surely triumph over the enemy.
In the same way that a scud missile has a guidance system and is programmed to hit a specific target and does not go off course, God’s Word is set and guaranteed to happen. It is sure! Moses, in Gen 1:3, puts it like this, “And God SAID let there be… and THERE WAS”. God SPAKE and it was done, He COMMANDED and it stood fast; by His WORD was the world created (Ps. 33:9; Heb. 11:13).
So, what makes God’s Word powerful? When you look at the word ‘powerful’ in Scripture, it speaks of something that is active, energetic and dynamic; it implies that someone is ‘at work’ or doing something that is effective.
I know what you’re thinking; that’s Creation; which is all well and good but how can the WORD of God help us on a day to day basis? Well, there are so many practical examples throughout the Scriptures where God speaks a WORD and none of it falls to the ground; every single promise He made came true.
Just look at Abraham; he had no children. God not only SAID he would give him a son, but blessed him with so much more. Out of Abraham came the nation of Israel and the promised Messiah. In fact we today are the sons of Abraham by faith (Gen.15: 4-6; 22:18; Gal 3:16).
The Word of God is powerful because it SHALL do whatever God sends it to do; and within that Word (whether it’s spoken or written) is the force, strategy, the capability and the wisdom; whatever is needed to get the job done. It SHALL accomplish! God said, “…My Word… shall not return unto me void… It shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it…” (Isa. 55:11).
When things got financially tight and there was no food for Elijah, the widow or her son (in fact she was about to cook the last meal and die); God not only provided for Elijah (as He said) but for the entire house. Not just one meal but a future supply. God’s purpose had to be accomplished (1 Kin. 17:9).
Our challenge today is to go beyond knowing how powerful the Word is, to experiencing its power in our lives. Can you imagine what would happen if we combined the POWER of the Holy Spirit, that resides in us (Acts: 1:8), with the POWER of God’s WORD? Wow! We’d deal the enemy that fatal blow.
So, we must take the Word of God from off the pages and deposit it into our thinking; for as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he (Pro. 23:7).
There’s a common saying that, ‘You are what you eat’. Well, it’s true; whatever we feed our thoughts and preoccupy our minds with, will eventually form our thinking and the words we say. We NEED to use the Word of God to guard our MINDS. If we meditate on it (think on, mull it over) day and night we will prosper and have good success (Jos. 1:8; Ps. 1:2). Here’s some food for thought! “…whatsoever things are true…whatsoever things are of good report…think on these things” (Phil 4:8).
Let’s use the Word of God, not only to change the way we think but to change the way we speak! It’s often what we say that defeats us; we talk defeat and are snared by the words of our mouth. How many times have we heard ourselves saying, “I can’t do it”; “It’s too much”; or “I’ll never make it”. Sound familiar? Remember, death and life is in the power of the tongue; we bring our thoughts to life by uttering them. So, why not use the tongue to confess the WORD; speak those things that bring spiritual life, strength and peace.
Thinking and speaking the Word of God by itself will not release its power. We have got to believe His Word with all our heart. Yes! Mix the Word of God with faith for it to profit us. So why do we struggle and despite repeating the scripture we still feel the same? Well, we will only tend to trust someone if we know them and love them.
Could it be that we need to spend time knowing God? Then and only then, will we count Him as being worthy of our love; completely TRUST him and ABSOLUTELY rely upon the POWER of His WORD and USE IT.
